Prof. Chhatra Mani Sharma completed his MSc in Zoology from the Central Department of Zoology, Tribhuvan University in 1996 (with a Gold Medal). Then he pursued an MSc and a PhD at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and completed his studies in 2008. He performed research on mercury and organic pollutants in fish during his PhD, performing whole-lake experimentation. His team manipulated the population of top predator fish (Northern pike) to study the cascading effects on the lake community and pollution levels. His publications during his PhD made him a “Top 20 Researchers” of the university in 2008, the only student among the researchers and professors.

He joined Kathmandu University in 2008, immediately after the completion of his PhD, and served there for a decade. In 2009, he was awarded “Young International Scientist” by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and provided a fellowship for two years. In 2013-14, he got an opportunity to work as a “Post-doc Researcher” at the Lappeenranta University of Technology in Finland for 18 months. He received another fellowship as a “PIFI Visiting Scientist” at the Chinese Academy of Sciences and worked there during 2017-2018. While working at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he was selected as “Professor of Academic Excellence” at Tribhuvan University and returned home prior to completion of his tenure. Now he is working as a Professor at the Central Department of Environmental Science, Tribhuvan University since July 2018. His research and teaching at the university focus on mercury pollution in biota (fish), waters, sediments, soils, and the atmosphere in the Himalayas. He has more than 100 scientific publications, including more than 70 in peer-reviewed journals.
